Stumpy’s Hatchet House Opens in Historic Judson Mill District

Indoor hatchet throwing venue expands into Upstate South Carolina

Greenville, South Carolina – Feb. 7, 2023 – Stumpy’s Hatchet House, the nation’s original axe-throwing and entertainment destination, is pleased to announce the opening of its newest location in the Judson Mill District. With more than 30 locations nationwide, Stumpy’s Hatchet House offers an alternative form of recreational entertainment with activities such as axe throwing and rustic-themed games.

“We are excited to announce the opening of Stumpy’s Hatchet House in this historic location,” said Trish Oliphant, co-founder of Stumpy’s Hatchet House. “We’ve fallen in love with this energetic city and the Judson Mill complex, and we are excited to be part of this amazing culture.”

The more than 7,000-square-foot rustic space features 22 axe-throwing targets, axe-throwing related competitions and challenges, a fully stocked bar with wine and beer selections, and a variety of hors d’oeuvres. In addition to axe-throwing, guests can enjoy a variety of games, such as Tumbling Timbers, Stump Puck, Ring Toss, and Giant Checkers.

The hatchet throwing venue also allows guests to bring their own food or order delivery from local restaurants.

“Stumpy’s Hatchet House is a fantastic addition to the Judson Mill campus,” said Ken Reiter, president of Belmont Sayre and co-developer of the Judson Mill District. “The entertainment experience they provide supports our vision to make the Judson Mill District a place where people can live, work, and play, and we look forward to having them part of our community.”

Stumpy’s invites guests ages 13 or older with an accompanying adult to reserve axe-throwing pits Wednesday through Sunday until 8 pm for up to two hours with prices ranging from $25 to $40 per person. After 8 pm, guests must be ages 18 or older. The space can also serve private, corporate, or fundraising parties, as well as team-building activities.

Mark and Trish Oliphant founded the Stumpy’s Hatchet House idea in 2015 with Stuart and Kelly Josberger during an evening barbecue while chopping wood for a bonfire. What started as an impromptu game of axe throwing at a makeshift bullseye led to them opening their first Stumpy’s location in Eatontown, New Jersey, in 2016.

“We owe much of our success to our patrons who keep coming back for the ultimate experience we provide and want to thank them for supporting us as we continue to grow,” said Oliphant.

The franchise’s newest location at the historic Judson Mill District will host a grand opening in early March that will include giveaways and promotions. Stumpy’s Hatchet House at Judson Mill will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 5 pm to 10 pm, Friday from 5 pm to 12 am, Saturday from 12 pm to 12 am, and Sunday from 1 pm to 8 pm. About Judson Mill District

Judson Mill District is a sustainable and vibrant mixed-use community offering soulful city living in Greenville, South Carolina. Once the largest textile mill in Greenville County and an integral part of Greenville’s Mill Crescent wrapping the city’s west side, Judson Mill District is now home to office, restaurant, brewery, retail, entertainment, and residential spaces. In 2017, Taft Family Ventures, a distinguished real estate investment and development firm based in Greenville, NC, joined with Belmont Sayre, a privately held real estate investment and development company based in Chapel Hill, NC, to transform the historic 800,000-square-foot textile mill that closed in 2015. While maintaining its vision to preserve the soul, spirit, and features of the historic mill, Judson Mill District utilizes a sustainable approach in revitalizing its 36-acre campus, which now fosters a vibrant and affordable community where people live, work, and play. For more information on Judson Mill District, visit
