Julie Carlson, Head Coach and Technical Director of Greenville’s USL W League team, said she was impressed by the skills and enthusiasm she saw during the two-day open tryouts and expects to sign as many as 10 of the players to the pre-professional team.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout and were motivated by the energy and passion that participants demonstrated,” Carlson said.
College players who compete in the USL W League during their off season do not lose NCAA eligibility.
The team is continuing to scout players. Tryout participants not offered roster positions will remain in the player pool and evaluated for the opportunity to be called up.
Players who attended the tryouts represented several area high schools and youth clubs, as well as Clemson University, Auburn University, Furman University, North Greenville University, Anderson University, Bob Jones University, Georgia State University, UNC-Asheville, College of Charleston, Wofford College, UNC Charlotte, and Spartanburg Methodist College.
Nine of the participants from the weekend were youth players who play with Carolina Elite Soccer Academy (CESA) or Carolina FC (CFC). High Schools represented included JL Mann, Riverside, St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Greenville Technical Charter, Wade Hampton, Landrum, Easley, Southside Christian, Byrnes and Boiling Springs.
“The women performing this weekend to be a part of this inaugural season came out with a high level of talent, which in turn helps us to establish a strong foundation from which to build,” Carlson said.
The tryouts consisted of two open sessions on Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 2 to 4 p.m. Following the afternoon session, some players were notified to participate in an invitation-only session on Sunday.
The USL women’s team roster will be announced in the coming weeks, with the team’s name, colors, and crest to follow in early spring. Tickets for the women’s 2022 season can be purchased by visiting greenvilletriumph.com/wleague.
